Screaming Woman sculpture by Pat Lee, among ivy — cover of Haven Art 2001–2013

A Book

Haven Art

2001 – 2013

a studio born from 9/11

When a life is given honestly to making — in stone, in color, in words — something opens. Intuition and desire become compass. The process itself heals. The product is simply evidence that the journey happened.

Front cover sculpture: Screaming Woman by Pat Lee

"The world begins to meet you at your doorstep."

Haven Art is the story of a confluence of people — different ages, different backgrounds — who found the place they could create something during a pivotal moment in New York's history. Our city, our country, was wounded on September 11, 2001, and we came together. The desire to create brought us together and sustained us for twelve years.

Artists emerged from Haven Art who had never touched clay before. Wall Street professionals became full-time sculptors. Traditional craftspeople found new voices. What made it possible was more than community. It was lineage — the passing of skill and philosophy from one life into another, the ancient work of the caring mentor, extended now to everyone who walked through the door.

If you've been standing at a threshold wondering whether to step through — this book is for you. The door is open.
